WEARING OUR WIGS
Have you ever been to a meeting so serious that you had to get silly? Did you ever feel so strongly about a goal that you singled it out in a manner nobody was expecting? If so, you understand the meeting which took place in Quitman School District’s central office boardroom Monday morning.
QSD Superintendent of Education Dr. Toriano Holloway doesn’t just explain; he exclaims with that energy of which he is known, “We are focused on our wildly important goal of raising student achievement, and we had a great time discussing our weekly commitments! The 4 Disciplines of Execution book has aided us in narrowing our focus, and we’re looking forward to a great year!”
This team of school principals and directors plan to meet every Monday and be accountable for the weekly commitments they are making toward their WIGs, the first of which is to reduce the amount of discipline referrals from 1,065 to 980 and the second is to increase student proficiency in ELA and Math from 32% to 35% by October 4th of this year.
How they will reach these Wildly Important Goals is by applying a disproportionate amount of energy to the activities that drive their lead measures, or actions that they can control, such as:
Lead Measure #1: Increase Leader in Me activities from 0 to 112 by October 4, 2019.
Lead Measure #2: Increase PBIS activities from 0 to 112 by October 4, 2019.
Lead Measure #3: Complete focused classroom visits from 0 to 540 by October 4, 2019.
Lead Measure #4: Complete focused meetings with teachers/students from 0 to 540 by October 4, 2019.
These lead measures are going to lead this team toward their lag measure, which will be the result of their actions, or the numbers they will include on the graphs posted in the hallway outside of the central office boardroom located at 104 East Franklin Street.
The group knows that posting not only their wildly important goals but also their lead and lag measures for everyone to see provides all QSD stakeholders with a comprehensive and honest look into the daily practices of the schools and their leaders.
Dr. Holloway is hoping that their WIGs will get everyone’s attention and people throughout the school and community will join them in reading The 4 Disciplines of Execution.
