Quitman School District

Volunteer

Quitman School District invites the communtiy to be a part of our school!  Numerous volunteer opportunies are available.  Involvement from the community is key to having a successful school system.  Community members who volunteer with the school are able to see first hand the exciting opportunities afforded to the children of Quitman School District.  Community members are also able to ease the work load of staff members and to impact the lives of the 2,000+ children who attend Quitman School District every day.

Project SCORE Mentoring Program - (Students and Communities Organized for Results that Endure)

A community member can volunteer to mentor a child ONE time per WEEK for just thirty minutes!  Our mentoring labs are directed by a certified teacher and provide you with all the necessary items to make your mentoring sessions a success!  We have labs at the Quitman Upper Elementary and Quitman Junior High.  Signing up is easy - just complete a volunteer application and pass a routine background check.  Join the 40 volunteers already making a difference.  The Quitman Junior High lab hosts mentors from the community!  Currently, the Quitman Upper Elementary lab is staffed by Quitman High School students serving as mentors.

Foam Tray Recycling Project

Quitman School District is committed to making a difference, not only in our schools, but also in our community.  With this thought in mind, our district has initiated a foam tray recycling program in partnership with Dart Container Corp.  This program allows students to recycle the foam trays they use each day in the cafeteria.  Trays are collected and delivered to Dart where the recycling takes place saving hundreds of trays each day from the garbage pile.  You can help by volunteering at one of the cafeterias to inspect the trays before they are approved for recycling.

Call the QSD Central Office at 601.776.2186 to help today!

QSD Imagination Library

The QSD Imagination Library provides free books to children residing in the Quitman School District, ages 0-4.  Each child receives their book in the mail each month.  Many agencies work together to make the QSD Imagination Library a success.  The United Way has adopted the Imagination Library as one of the agencies in its fundraising efforts.  The Hardin Foundation has provided a matching grant to the United Way to help fund the Imagination Library programs.  And, of course, the queen of the dream, Dolly Parton, has her own foundation--Dolly Parton's Imagination Library--where all the work takes place in choosing and mailing books.  Our program was the FIRST in our area and we are proud to have piloted the program here.

We could use volunteers to help register children for the program.

Donations of money are also needed.  Though the books are inexpensive -- less than $2.50 per child -- with our potential to reach 1,000 children, funds are needed to sustain the program and keep this gift going out to our children.

Help us give this gift to ALL children, ages 0-4 in our community.  And, if you can, donate to our project -- just $25 per year let's a child know you care!  Donations to the QSD Imagination Library are tax-deductible.
