Message from Principal Michael McDonald...
Welcome to Quitman Junior High School, home of the Panthers, where striving for excellence is our goal. Each day we practice our school motto "WE SET THE STANDARDS"!
Students today are unique, and pose a number of challenges; however, creating an environment that is safe, orderly, and stimulating is a vital component of the educational beliefs of Quitman Junior High. Creating an environment where students are encouraged to be dreamers and challenged to reach goals that were previously thought impossible are important as well.
Helping students identify their strengths and weaknesses through experimentation is an approach that we pride ourselves on. In order for students to be successful in education, it is important for them to practice using research based methods that will allow them to solve academic, as well as real life problems.
This past school year, Quitman Junior High School received a SUCCESSFUL school rating from the Mississippi Department of Education. As many of you know, our students are assessed using the Mississippi Curriculum Test (MCT), 2nd Edition. This test challenges students in the areas of Language Arts, Mathematics and Science. The data shows that our students have made significant gains in the area of mathematics when tested as 8th graders and gradual improvements across grade levels in Language Arts.
This school year, students at Quitman Junior High School will be introduced to two new programs. Our 7th grade students will have the opportunity to participate in our visual arts program. Through the study of visual arts, students respond to life experiences through images, structures, and tactile works of art and design. Students will continue to learn the language of the arts and how to interpret visual symbols.
Our 6th grade students will be introduced to a new program as well. Moving Towards the Art of Good Health (MTAGH), is a health initiative whose curriculum focuses on the joy of dancing, dance as a creative form of exercise and as a lifetime activity contributing to lifelong wellness.
We will continue to strengthen our academic programs with the addition of interactive white boards. By the end of the 2011 – 2012 school year, our English, Math, Science, and History departments will utilize some form of interactive white boards in their classrooms.
I would like to thank all the teachers, students, parents and community members for their support as we strive for excellence at Quitman Junior High.
