Community Book Read

A community-wide read is a shared reading experience where members of the community all read and discuss one book.  A community can range from a single grade level, to a whole school or district, to an entire city or beyond.  Each year, Quitman School District participates in a commnity book read.  A book is chosen and given to every student, grades Prek-12.  There are also books available for some community members.  Everyone is encouraged to read the book at the same time as a way of bringing the community together with the schools.

Some of the benefits of a commuity book read are:

  • Builds community across ages, socioeconomic levels, and various backgrounds
  • Creates excitement about books and discussion topics and nurtures a culture of literacy
  • Inspires and encourages readers of all abilities and levels
  • Provides opportunities for meaningful conversations about ideas, social issues, and historical legacies

In 2023, QSD chose The Wizard of Oz as the community book.  It was amazing to see our community and school work together to make this a success.  Local businesses and individuals decorated their strore fronts and yards, put out signs and banners, and attended the finale event at the school.  At school, students participated in educational activites related to the book, created art, decorated classroom doors, dressed as characters, and so much more!
